Abstract
In this modern era, various degenerative diseases are growing, one of which is diabetes
mellitus which is characterized by an increase in blood sugar and occurs in the elderly. One way
to deal with high sugar levels in patients with diabetes mellitus non-pharmacologically is brisk
walking exercise. This study aims to determine the effect of brisk walking exercise on blood sugar
levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The design of this study used a one group pretestpost test design. The population in this study was 39 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the
Balongrawe neighborhood, Kedundung sub-district, Magersari city, Mojokerto. The sampling
technique was purposive sampling. The number of samples were 26 people. Research instrument
used SPO of bris walking exercise and digital glucometer. Data analysis used Wilcoxon signed
rank test. The results of this study suggested that before doing brisk walking exercise, respondents'
blood sugar levels were mostly high (≥ 200 mg/dL), as many as 16 people (61.5%), and after doing
brisk walking exercise, most respondents' blood sugar levels were moderate (90-199 mg /dL) as
many as 19 people (73.1%). Wilcoxon signed rank test results suggested that p-value = 0.000 with
= 0.05 so H1 is accepted, meant that there was an effect of brisk walking exercise on blood sugar
levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Balongrawe neighborhood, Kedundung subdistrict, Magersari district, Mojokerto city. Brisk walking exercise is effective for increasing the
maximum capacity of the heart rate, stimulating muscle contraction, breaking down glycogen and
increasing tissue oxygen. This exercise can also reduce plaque formation by increasing the use of
fat and increasing the use of blood sugar levels so that blood sugar levels fall.
