The Relationship Between Physical Activity And The Incidence Of Obesity In Adolescents
Abstract
Introduction: One of the reasons for the increasing global prevalence of obesity is physical activity. Physical
activity is not only important in preventing obesity but can also prevent chronic diseases such as
hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity and the incidence of
obesity in adolescents.
Methods: This study uses a correlation analytic design using a cross-sectional approach. The sample is
teenagers, totaling 59 people in senior high school. The sampling technique uses purposive sampling with
the criteria of adolescents who are obese (based on Body Mass Index screening) and adolescents who are
not currently sick. Collecting data using the instrument The Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents
(PAQ-A) and using a questionnaire for the variable incidence of obesity. Data were analyzed using the test.
Spearman's rho.
Result: The results showed that there was a relationship between physical activity and the incidence of
obesity with p-value = 0.01 <0.05. The value of the correlation coefficient is -0.41, it can be said that the
relationship between the two variables is not unidirectional, and the strength of the relationship is
sufficient. Most of the physical activities carried out by respondents were light physical activities so it was
very possible for obesity to occur.
Conclusion: The lower the physical activity, the lower the amount of energy needed so that it will have an
impact on body weight or the occurrence of obesity.
